FreeMem Pro by 3B Software is available through RealNetworks software at half normal price ($19.95 plus VAT if you are an EU customer).  This memory management software promises to speed up your PC by constantly monitoring memory usage and freeing up physical RAM which is normally wasted by Windows and programs running under Windows.  FreeMem Pro runs in the background and will speed up memory access (particularly noticeable when switching between programs), reducing wait times and increasing program speed.

As programs are run on a modern PC, they grab large amounts of system memory and unfortunately, errors in the Windows operating system, and some programs, mean that the memory allocated to each program is not necessarily released when you Quit the program. There can also be holes in the system memory, akin to disk defragmentation, which can mean that it is not being used to its full extent. This is one of the instances which FreeMem Pro comes into the fore and will release that memory for the system to use once again.

RAM that is used by large applications, reserved for file caching and large program libraries is allocated to a swap file, providing a performance boost for the current application as well.

If you want to fine tune the system. the program will even allow you to alter how much memory FreeMem Pro should attempt to free up and how often it should run, as well as how much CPU resources you want to give the program.  With an easy to understand interface, and well written help file, even the advanced options should not be too daunting for the average user (mind you, there seems little need to touch them).  Further tweaks can be made to improve the performance of the operating system and also to repair problems using the freeware program, Advanced WindowsCare which proves a useful addition to FreeMem Pro.

The only problem which we have noticed, is that on a Windows XP machine, where there are several user accounts, the program does not install automatically for all users - it only appears to install for the system administrator (ie. the one who installed it).  We have reported this as a problem in v5.1 and hopefully, this will be resolved shortly.

This program appears to do exactly as it promises and at this price, is a welcome addition to anyone's armoury.
