There is an age old adage that the best way of making money is not to spend any.  However, with the pressures of current society to keep up with the Jones's, this is very difficult.  You can however have the best of both worlds by trying to ensure that whenever you buy something, you buy it at the lowest price possible.

Click here to buy & sell on eBay!Some of the best bargains on the internet can be had by bidding through online auction sites, such as eBay .  However, you are not guaranteed to win an auction and you have to follow these golden auction rules:

1) Check out the lowest price that you can buy something new beforehand

2) Check out the previous feedback for the seller - do they deliver what they promise and on time?

3) Take account of any postage and PayPal costs which may increase the total cost of your purchase

4) If in any doubt - ASK QUESTIONS - you will be surprised by the number of people who buy something without checking on its condition, or even that it is working.  If it condition is not stipulated in the auction, there is no guarantee that the item will meet your expectations.

5) Ask for a photo if possible and check the model number if applicable

6) Finally, set yourself a limit and do not go over that limit.

OK, so you have tried using the various schemes outlined by ourselves to make money, This option may seem obvious - if only I had the products to sell on the internet I could make a million !!

Low Cost DVDs and Videos

Visit DVD.co.uk - the cheapest online source of DVDs in the UK (postage is free)When we were looking for some low cost DVDs we were surprised that even on eBay, some of the latest DVDs and videos were being sold for near cost price and so we did quite a bit of price comparison on line.  One of the lesser known retailers which we found (DVD.co.uk),  also proved to provide DVDs, Playstation 2, PC and XBox games a lot cheaper than most of the more well known brands and even cheaper than the goods were available on eBay in some instances !!  They are not widely advertised and do not appear on most of the shopping portal sites, so we felt that they deserve a mention here.  With free UK delivery, they are hard to beat !!  For example, the 2 disc Lord of the Rings (The Return of the King) is available for £10.99 instead of the Recommended price of £27.99 and the full boxed set of all three movies in that trilogy is available for £17.99 instead of the RRP of £49.99 - see our page specifically aimed at the deals from this excellent retailer.

Save on Software Prices

If like us, you are fed up with having to pay double the price in the USA for software (for example Windows VISTA and Norton Internet Security is double the price in the UK than in the USA), then you can circumvent this, by renting a US postal address before placing any orders.  Parcel2Go offer such a service for £9.99 + VAT per annum (plus postal charges from the USA).  With Microsoft's Windows VISTA costing around £199 in the UK (or $199 in the USA) you can save around £70 just on the purchase of this one item.

Comparing Prices

Before making purchases, schemes such as Kelkoo allow you to compare prices of a wide range of items from several suppliers - they can provide you with a good overview of the market, quickly.  However, they do not necessarily include the cheapest suppliers (such as DVD.co.uk) and if you go to one of the advertisers websites through them, then you may lose any incentive gained through your favourite loyalty scheme. However, you can just use them to compare prices and then try to access the cheapest website through your loyalty scheme, making the most of both worlds.

Loyalty Schemes

There are several loyalty schemes on the internet which offer money back, shares or points for going to well known retailers through their websites, so having found the cheapest supplier for your goods, it is always worthwhile visiting these loyalty schemes to see whether you could go to the cheapest supplier via their site and earn yourself a little in return - we have reviewed the range of loyalty schemes here.

Postage Costs

As said, whenever you compare prices, you need to take account of postage costs.  Although some suppliers, like DVD.co.uk offer free post and packing, in most cases, this is extra and certainly something to be wary of when buying through eBay.  One option is to ask the seller if they are willing to allow you to use your own courier service to collect the item, as this can prove cheaper for you, especially if you use a company such as Parcel2Go.

Following the above rules can save you a great deal of money.  Loyalty points are nice to earn, but at the end of the day are unlikely to compete with shopping around for the best bargains first of all.
